Random Thoughts (2)

I recently read an article covering the war in Europe; the report lists the similarities between the start of WW2 and today, suggesting that we are following the same patterns. The article also covers perspectives from both sides. In reading the article, I found it challenging to comprehend how some people can justify the actions of Russia toward Ukraine. It got me thinking about how our varying perspective shapes our views on events, people, and the world. For example, war is a complex and challenging topic – there are many varied perspectives on war, and no one view is necessarily correct. Some people feel that war is a necessary evil, while others believe it is a horrific and destructive force that should be avoided at all costs. Many believe that war is the best method to resolve disputes between countries. But, regarding the current war in Europe, how you frame the issue determines how people will.

It makes it interesting to think about every other issue we have and whether we were manipulated to believe a certain way because someone was able to frame the case to get their desired result. The framing effect and propaganda can be potent tools; critical thinking is the best approach to avoid being manipulated. However, history has shown us that even the most intelligent fall prey to these methods. Germans, for example, somehow were led to believe that their horrific actions were justified during WW2.

In another article, I read about the recent acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk and the controversy surrounding the deal. I didn’t quite understand why people would be so upset, then I started thinking about the framing effect and the use of propaganda to manipulate others. And it made sense to me. Twitter, in many ways, is a potent tool that can be used to manipulate the masses, so whoever controls the platform has control and perhaps even more influence than any leader today. So, this technique has me wondering if we can use it in a positive light. It’s pretty interesting to see how Elon uses the tool – I believe he has good intentions. Still, I may be operating under false illusions based on my perspectives shaped by my environment and the media I consume.

  1. Hi Peter, great read! I also agree with you on the concept of thinking about war and how it is such a big thing, and how our perspective is influenced by our everyday environment. I never really realized how biased my view could be just because of where I grew up or the "propaganda" around me.

  4. Hey Peter, I like how your post is a nuanced take on the matter and I definitely agree with you. Media is such a powerful tool and I think it is being used as divisive force in our current climate. Like how you said, people can dangerously frame information in a way to fit their propaganda and cause conflict.
